In honor of Earth Day, here’s the Earth … as depicted on our Hunt-Lenox Globe, one of the Library’s greatest treasures. Located in our Maps Division, the globe was prepared around 1510, and is the earliest surviving engraved copper sphere from the period immediately following the discovery of the New World, meaning it was one of the first cartographic representations of the Americas known to geographers. Of the two continents in the Western hemisphere, only South America is represented, appearing as a large island with the regional names “Mundus Novus” (the New World), “Terra Sanctae Crucis” (the Land of the Holy Cross), and “Terra de Brazil” (the Land of Brazil).

In honor of New York City Immigrant Heritage Week 2013 (April 17 - 24) we posted a reading list of fiction exploring the immigrant experience in New York last week. Today we’ve got a companion non-fiction list, We Are New Yorkers: Immigrant Memoirs and Biographies, which includes books about 19th, 20th and 21st century New Yorkers who arrived from other lands or whose families made that courageous journey.

Happy NYC Immigrant Heritage Week! To celebrate we’ve made a book list, We Are New Yorkers: The New York Immigrant Experience in Fiction, which combines old school classics like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith and Call It Sleep by Henry Roth and 21st century stories, such as Joseph O’Neill’s Netherland, along with other essential immigrant fiction set at least partly in New York like Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Julia Alvarez’s How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents and Typical American by Gish Jen.

There are so many Doctors to chose from, it’s important to do your homework in order to identify a potential favorite. One of NYPL’s own shares some of her favorite moments with each of the first 7 doctors… after that you’ll have to decide on your own. We’re having a heated debate about the final three right now.

Game designer and musician Kenji Eno has passed away at the age of 42. He worked on several titles for the Sega Saturn including D, Real Sound, and Enemy Zero and more recently contributed music to the iOS release Newtonica.

Join us on Friday, November 30 at Mid-Manhattan Library for a free musical performance by singer-songwriter Donald P. Johnson. Starts at 6 p.m. with doors at 5:30 p.m.

Donald P. Johnson is a singer-songwriter and he has been making music for more than 30 years. In his youth he was an accomplished classical pianist and performed at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall.

Since then he has focused his music on the song form, with emphasis on the human voice as the avatar for truth and poetry. He will perform a set of “Work Songs”, which he describes as “music in its most essential form.” He will sing about struggle, pain, peace, and love.

On Saturday, 11/3 libraries all over the world will celebrate International Games Day by playing games.

This year, at Mid-Manhattan Library, we’ll have a variety of board games as well as a special line up of music video games from 2012 in Room 101 from 1-5 p.m.

Our trucks will be leaving us after Labor Day, so we had to pop over to the Library today for this new treat! Kelvin Slush is at the Library on the corner of 40th and 5th Ave. today until 7 p.m. and next Wednesday from 4-7 p.m.

If these look as meltwatering to you as they did to us, check out all the ways you can mix their flavors. For reference, the front two are green and black tea slush mixed with raspberry (left) and strawberry fruit purée. The red straw is sitting in their Arnold Palmer special (tea and citrus slush, mixed with pineapple or white peach), and the blue straw is another green and black tea, but with passion fruit. (Of course, I was the only one who got something different.)

It was built of a bright brick throughout; its sky-line was fantastic, and even its ground plan was wild. It had been the outburst of a speculative builder, faintly tinged with art, who called its architecture sometimes Elizabethan and sometimes Queen Anne, apparently under the impression that the two sovereigns were identical. It was described with some justice as an artistic colony, though it never in any definable way produced any art. But although its pretensions to be an intellectual centre were a little vague, its pretensions to be a pleasant place were quite indisputable.”

Our first selection is G.K.Chesterton’s The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare, available as a free download for the Kindle, Nook, and Sony E-reader.

This 1907 novel reveals an Edwardian era London teeming with anarchists, undercover detectives, and the philosophical musings common to the author’s more well-known Father Brown mysteries.

We will also be discussing it online as part of our Readers Den book discussion this July!
